Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been moved from house arrest to a detention center, just days before his 27-year prison sentence is due to begin. The move came after Bolsonaro tried to break his ankle shackles and escape.

Bolsonaro himself admitted on Saturday that he tried to destroy the anklet he was wearing out of "curiosity."

At the time, Brazil's Supreme Court had accused Bolsonaro of attacking the shackle with a soldering iron. In a video published by the court, the shackle is seen badly burned and destroyed – but still around Bolsonaro's leg.

The court therefore decided that Bolsonaro should be transferred to detention to serve a prison sentence.

The right-wing nationalist politician was recently sentenced to 27 years in prison for trying to stage a coup after his election loss in 2022, when his supporters stormed parliament and government buildings.

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August this year, when he was deemed a high flight risk. His lawyers want the 70-year-old Bolsonaro to serve his sentence at home, as they believe that imprisonment would have posed a danger to his health.
