Far-right Bolsonaro was sentenced last year to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup after he lost the 2022 election.

The law, pushed through by the conservative majority in Congress, prevents the aggregation of prison sentences for similar crimes, and also affects the sentences of the hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters convicted of involvement in the coup attempt.

The lifting of the veto against the law could mean that Bolsonaro will have his sentence significantly shortened. However, new trials may follow, as the congressional decision could be appealed to the Supreme Court.

71-year-old Bolsonaro is currently serving his sentence under house arrest after being hospitalized.
