Bolsonaro was taken from the house where he is currently under house arrest to a hospital in Brazil's capital Brasília, according to several media outlets. According to his son, senator Flavio Bolsonaro, a persistent and severe hiccups had made the 70-year-old unable to breathe properly, which was followed by vomiting.

Bolsonaro's medical team therefore advised the former president to seek care at the hospital where he is now being held under observation by both doctors and police.

"As soon as we have a clear picture of his condition, we will update with more information," says his doctor Claudio Birolini in a statement according to O Globo.

Bolsonaro was not present during the final part of the trial against him, where he was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for attempting to stage a coup to retain power after the 2022 election, due to health reasons.

He has denied all allegations and his representatives have announced that they will appeal the verdict.
