”The accused acted systematically, during his term and after the election loss, to incite revolt and destabilization of the democratic rule of law principle”, Gonet writes in a statement on Monday.

Right-wing radical Bolsonaro, who ruled Brazil between 2019 and 2022, is on trial for attempting to stage a coup after the election defeat in 2022. He is also accused of having led a ”criminal organization” that planned to prevent the current left-wing president Lula da Silva from coming to power.

In connection with the suspected coup attempt, Bolsonaro supporters stormed the parliament and government buildings in the capital Brasília, similar scenes that took place in Washington after Donald Trump's election loss to Joe Biden in 2020.

70-year-old Bolsonaro rejects the allegations and writes on X that he ”never did violence to democracy or the constitution”. He further describes the trial as a ”witch hunt”.

The same words were used by Trump when the American president last week threatened Brazil with 50 percent tariffs if the legal process is not stopped.
