The Russian cross-country skiers were excluded from international competition due to Russia's aggressive war in Ukraine, and since then, Bolsjunov has had to settle for domestic ski competitions.

But on Thursday, it's time again for the former Olympic gold medalist to line up at the starting line in a competition outside his home country's borders.

Bolsjunov is registered for the 30-kilometer Südtirol Moonlight Classic in Italian Seiser Alm, a competition not organized by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (Fis) or Ski Classics.

The prize money is 14,200 euros, equivalent to approximately 160,000 kronor.
