The incident occurred when a Hercules C-130 military transport aircraft was about to land at an airport in El Alto, near the capital La Paz. For unknown reasons, the plane skidded off the runway and came to rest in a nearby field.
The plane reportedly hit several vehicles along a highway. A spokesman for the emergency services said at least 15 people had died, but did not specify whether the people were inside the plane or outside it at the time of the accident.
According to the country's central bank, the plane was transporting banknotes to the capital. The value of the banknotes is unknown, but they are said to have originated abroad.
