The tragic discovery was made at the end of July. A hiker found the two bodies in a location in southern Switzerland, near the Italian border, and reported it to police in the canton of Valais.

The climbers were 39 and 41 years old when they disappeared in the area 34 years ago. DNA technology confirms that the two Belgians who have been found are the missing climbers, the Forensic Institute of Valais Hospital writes in a statement.

Since 1925, police in Valais have kept records of people who have disappeared in the area, mainly in high mountain areas and rivers.
