During 2024, a total of 1,064 boat engine thefts were reported, which represents an increase of 13 percent compared to 2023, according to statistics from the Crime Prevention Council compiled by Larmtjänst.

The largest increase was noted in the Stockholm police region – where the number of reported boat engine thefts rose by as much as 43 percent. The region alone accounts for 37 percent of the thefts in the country.

According to Larmtjänst, the increase occurred primarily during the first half of 2024.

"During the autumn, there have been arrests of boat engine thieves who were active in the Stockholm region, which may be a contributing factor to the decrease during the last two quarters," says investigator Viktor Eklöf at Larmtjänst in a press release.

Eklöf also says that thefts of outboard motors have increased – a problem shared with Finland.

The thefts are divided into police regions. In parentheses, the number of boat engines stolen in 2023.
