The alarm came shortly after 10 pm on Tuesday evening. According to the Swedish Maritime Administration, the sunken motorboat was in company with another boat.

"One child and one adult are still missing. One child and one adult have been taken to hospital," said Adam Isaksson Samara, a police spokesman.

A major rescue operation was launched, involving resources from the Swedish Maritime Administration, the rescue service, ambulance and the coast guard. Drones were used in the search and a helicopter also participated initially. At around 2:30 a.m., the operation was paused for the night.

"We have searched the entire area and cannot do more with the current conditions. When it gets light, we will search by helicopter," said Niclas Härenstam, Director of Communications at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

According to reports, the boat is believed to have collided with a merchant ship.

We don't know the cause yet, but merchant ships enter Stenungsund in the fairway there, so it's not unlikely that it could be that way, said Niclas Härenstam, Director of Communications at the Swedish Maritime Administration during the night.

According to the police, the Coast Guard has stopped a ship and a preliminary investigation into negligence in maritime traffic has been initiated.
