It was a heavy hit when Edmonton's Darnell Nurse, who came speeding from behind his own goal, was tackled by Toronto's Ryan Reaves early in the second period. Nurse fell to the ice and lay there for several minutes at the Scotiabank Arena, where the atmosphere remained silent and tense while Nurse received help.
A bloody Darnell Nurse was supported to the locker room and did not return to the game. Reaves received a match penalty.
The match began with an early goal by Edmonton, after an assist by Swedish Mattias Janmark.
Also, Toronto's Swedish star defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson made an assist when the home team took the lead 3–2 in the third period. After an equalizer by Edmonton in the next-to-last minute, the match went to overtime – which Toronto's Mitch Marner then settled after just 40 seconds.
