Research company Testfakta has compared common types of tuna in a laboratory analysis. Bisphenol A (BPA) was found in all 11 products, and the replacement substance BPF was detected in nine.

However, levels of the heavy metals mercury, cadmium and lead were below EU limits.

Bisphenol A is a common chemical used in packaging, including the coating on cans. The EU has decided to ban the hormone-disrupting substance in materials that come into contact with food. The ban on canned fish will take effect in January 2028.

Testfakta's analysis also found major differences in sustainable fishing practices. More products carry the MSC label than ten years ago, but only one of the 11 products gets the green light in the WWF Fish Guide.
