The 65-year-old bishop became globally noticed after her preaching during the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump earlier this year.

Her appeal to Trump to protect LGBTQ people and migrants was followed by both praise and criticism – not least from the president himself.

"She was nasty in tone and not convincing", he wrote on social media after the inauguration.

Now, the Swedish-descent bishop has been invited to speak at the traditional church service held every year in connection with the opening of the parliament – and accepted.

Jonas Eek, dean of the Stockholm Cathedral congregation, thinks the invitation feels self-evident.

"I did not perceive Bishop Budde's preaching at the inauguration as polemical or provocative. Instead, her message was classically Christian – that those with power and might are asked to show mercy to those who are exposed and powerless", he says.

Mariann Edgar Budde will speak before both the royal family and the parliament's politicians in Stockholm.
