Sweden’s lower temperatures favor the survival of the virus. It can then spread among larger groups of birds that either move to southern Sweden or stop there on their way to warmer latitudes.
The number of confirmed bird flu cases among wild birds is considered low compared with last year. However, there have been outbreaks in Denmark and the Netherlands, prompting the authorities to publish a new situation report on the spread of the infection.
In the past two months, three cases of the virus have been detected in wild birds in Sweden.
