Bird deaths in Europe heat wave prompt Swedish breeders to prepare

According to Pia Gustavsson, chief veterinarian at the Swedish Bird Association, there are no such problems here as there are in France yet.

But we sent out a reminder to our breeders ahead of the heat wave the other week to have fewer birds in each box before transport to slaughter and to load the birds in the evening or at night when it is cool, she says.

Gustavsson notes that the birds are more stressed than usual during a heat wave and lack sweat glands.

They often flap when it's hot because it's under the wings that the blood vessels are most superficial and they can get air in.
