It is still unclear whether hackers obtained any funds in the suspected breach or how it happened.

Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by daily trading volume, says users’ funds are “completely secure.” Meanwhile, the crypto giant has blocked all deposits and withdrawals overnight as a “security measure.”

In parallel, Tether and Circle, two major stablecoin issuers, said they were freezing their currencies on Binance for security reasons. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that track the exchange rates of traditional currencies. Together, Tether and Circle represent $1.5 billion and $800 million, respectively, in frozen cryptocurrency.

In connection with the news, bitcoin, the dominant cryptocurrency, fell by about 3.5 percent.

In February last year, more than $1.5 billion worth of cryptocurrency - just under 15 billion kronor - was stolen from the Bybit platform in a cyberattack attributed to hackers with links to North Korea.
