As recently as last week, the Swedish Basketball Federation could announce that they had received a gift of four million kronor from billionaire Christer Gardell.
Now the billionaire is stepping into another sport. Cross-country skiing.
In a press release, the 64-year-old confirms that he has chosen to sponsor the star trio with "a million amount" over a three-year period, as support for their continued effort.
"Outrageous"
"Sports are incredibly important for our society. The positive effects that our elite athletes contribute with are almost invaluable", he writes in a press release and continues:
"It's actually outrageous to see how we treat our elite athletes today. Collectively, the business community has withdrawn an enormous amount of its support".
"Take responsibility"
Moreover, he urges more to do the same.
"Now I hope to be able to inspire more to take their responsibility, both companies and private individuals with economic prerequisites".
When the news landed with Jonna Sundling, who recently brought in a total of 917,500 kronor for her successful World Championship, it came as a surprise.
"Christer's contribution means incredibly much to me personally. I get so incredibly happy when I get a receipt like this that what I deliver on the ski track is really appreciated. I devote all my time and energy to developing and succeeding with the Swedish flag on my chest", says Jonna Sundling.
