The statement comes after AI researcher Jacob Coxon criticized AI companies earlier in September for not taking responsibility for development. Coxon recently quit Anthropic in protest. He also previously worked at OpenAI.
“Those who are building AI seriously believe that it could kill us all before the end of the decade,” Coxon has written in social media posts and repeated in interviews, according to NBC.
Bill Gates does not downplay the risks of AI. He calls for greater involvement from government agencies in the US.
Nobody believes that self-regulation is enough, he tells NBC and continues:
While it's hard to be 100 percent sure, there has never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with bad intentions using the latest AI tools.
Following Coxon's warning, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in AI development. Amodei was also supported by Sam Altman, head of competitor OpenAI, and tech billionaire Elon Musk.
