On Tuesday, the women's team final will be decided, where Simone Biles of the USA is the favorite to win. Along with Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, and Hezly Riviera, she hopes to bring home the gold.
And when the competitions get underway, her husband, Chicago Bears player Jonathan Owens, will be sitting in the stands. He has received sharp criticism on social media in recent years.
Urged to divorce
The couple, who got married last spring, were guests on the podcast "The Pivot" led by former NFL player Ryan Clark. In the episode, Owens said that he didn't know who Biles was when they matched on a dating app in 2020 and that he thinks he is the "captain" in the relationship.
The statement received sharp criticism on social media, and Biles' fans urged her to divorce. The criticism came as a shock to Simone Biles, who herself tried to understand why the fans were upset.
"I laughed and thought that he's so sweet, because there's nothing wrong with him saying that he thinks he's the captain, since he's the best guy I've ever met", she previously said to AFP.
Can win multiple Olympic Games gold
The 27-year-old believes that Owens' statement was misinterpreted and thinks that the fans went too far in their criticism.
"They started getting really mean".
Simone Biles suffered a ankle injury during Sunday's warm-up. However, it will not prevent her from competing in all four events in the team final. Biles herself is also the favorite to win the all-around competition and has a chance to win additional individual medals. She has qualified for three out of four event finals in the Olympic Games.
