It was the Rangers' fifth straight loss and in those games they have a 12–30 goal differential.
Ottawa led 4–0 after the first period.
"The start is not good. It's hard enough to win in this league and if you concede four goals it doesn't get any easier," Mika Zibanejad said quietly after the match.
"Now we need to turn desperation into some form of energy."
Ottawa was up 6–0 before the New York Rangers scored their first two. Zibanejad had two assists. Goalie Jonathan Quick was replaced after allowing six goals on 17 shots.
Over the weekend, the Rangers lost 2–10 to Boston. The team is last in the Eastern Conference.
