Egypt led the group heading into the final round, but after a 1–1 draw against Iran and Belgium's 5–1 victory over New Zealand, Egypt fell to second place.
Iran thought they had sealed the victory with a winning goal in extra time, but Shojae Khalilzadeh's goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a very narrow offside. Iran then created another great chance to seal the win, but failed to get the ball past a great Mostafa Shoubir in goal for Egypt.
Egypt thus escaped elimination and will face Australia in the round of 16 in Texas next week.
Iran finished third in the group; New Zealand were eliminated.
