The cancer diagnosis was communicated over the weekend, after 82-year-old Biden met with a doctor last week following urological symptoms.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday and the cancer is said to have spread to the skeleton.
"Although it is an aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which opens up for effective treatment", his staff wrote in a press release.
"The President and his family are exploring treatment options together with doctors", it further states.
Joe Biden, whose son Beau Biden died of cancer in 2015, writes on X that he and his wife Jill have learned that they are strongest when life is toughest and thanks supporters for their support.
