At least 24 schools have been set on fire or looted since the protests began, according to Geffray.

On Friday, more than 400 schools were closed and television images showed police using tear gas to disperse protesters in Toulouse, for example.

Around 2,000 people were taken into custody by police and hundreds of police officers were injured in unrest around French schools last week.

Students are protesting against everything from scheduling and teacher shortages to excessively large classes.
