With elections coming up in 2027 in key EU countries such as France, Italy, Spain and Poland, the pressure is on to agree on the EU's long-term budget for 2028-34 this year.
Yes, there are elections in many countries. But that alone cannot be a reason to force a negotiation. We will not agree to a bad budget deal just because it is rushed, says EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz (M).
On Tuesday morning, she held a meeting with the countries that contribute most to the EU budget to discuss austerity requirements ahead of the continued negotiations.
At the same time, 16 other EU countries have formed an opposing bloc, demanding that the budget not be cut.
