After a summer in which Bergvall was rumoured to be on his way out of Tottenham, he was given a start by coach Roberto De Zerbi when "Spurs" visited Brentford in the first round of the English league.
The home team took command immediately and in the 12th minute Keane Lewis-Potter made it 1-0. Minutes later, Brentford extended the lead after carelessness from Richarlison and Bergvall, who lost the ball in their own half.
Lucas Bergvall was substituted at half-time before Sweden national team coach Graham Potter, and Brentford won the match 3-0 after Michael Kayode scored the third goal at the start of the second half.
"We weren't ready, we made a lot of mistakes," said Tottenham coach Roberto De Zerbi.
