Mourinho was fired from Fenerbahce at the end of August, after the Turkish club was eliminated by just Benfica in the Champions League qualifying.
Benfica in turn started the league play in CL football by losing 2–0 to 2–3 at home to Karabach on Tuesday. The loss led to the Lisbon club firing coach Bruno Lage.
Coach legend José Mourinho, 62, has not coached a club in his home country since he left Porto for Chelsea in 2004.
On Wednesday, he confirmed his interest in taking the job in Benfica, which expects the negotiations to be completed soon.
