Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez wants Mourinho back on the coaching bench and is using that argument to be re-elected as president next weekend. Mourinho previously coached Real Madrid and left in 2013.
Benfica said in a statement that Pérez had outlined his plans but said the Portuguese coach's release clause was 15 million euros.
Previous media reports said that it would cost Real Madrid three million euros to release José Mourinho, who has one year left on his contract with Benfica.
Real Madrid missed out on a major title for the second season in a row.
