The sixth-seeded American Ben Shelton had to throw in the towel during his match in the third round of the US Open, and left the court in tears.
The 22-year-old suffered a shoulder injury during the match, and had to give a walkover after the fourth set against the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. The score was then 2–2 in sets.
The injury may have occurred after Shelton threw himself after a ball during the third set. Early in the fourth set, he turned to his trainer, and then received treatment. He continued to play but had to break off the match afterwards.
Shelton reached the semifinal in the 2023 edition of the US Open.
