England's Jude Bellingham made an obscene gesture after equalizing against Slovakia in Sunday's European Championship round of 16. Now, the European football association (Uefa) announces that the star will be investigated.
"Uefa will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding a potential breach of the basic rules of decent conduct", writes Uefa in a press release.
On X, formerly Twitter, Bellingham has denied that the gesture was directed at the Slovakian bench:
"An inside joke aimed at some close friends who were at the match. I have nothing but respect for how Slovakia played tonight", wrote the 21-year-old.
England won the match 2–1 after extra time. Jude Bellingham's goal, a stylish bicycle kick, meant 1–1 in added time before Harry Kane then decided the match in extra time.
In the quarterfinals, England will face Switzerland.
