Once the ship docks in port, it will be seized, according to Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken.
The operation is seen as a major setback for Russia's attempts to circumvent Western sanctions on Russia's oil trade, imposed after Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine in 2022.
According to Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, the raid on the ship was carried out as part of international cooperation between the G7 and the Nordic and Baltic countries.
"As long as Russia continues its war of aggression against Ukraine, we will continue to act," he wrote on X.
The EU has blacklisted hundreds of ships suspected of transporting Russian oil in violation of sanctions.
