Stricter rules are intended to stop drone interference at air bases and airports in Belgium.

The announcement comes from Minister of Communications Jean-Luc Crucke after an emergency meeting with the National Security Council in Brussels on Thursday.

"I will present an order banning unauthorized drones in sensitive areas. There is an existing regulatory framework that can be used better," Crucke said, according to the newspaper Le Soir.

On Tuesday evening, air traffic in Belgium was brought to a standstill for a long time after drones were spotted near the airports in Brussels and Liège. There have also been sightings at several air bases recently.

Defense Minister Theo Francken suspects foreign interference – although he does not explicitly point the finger at Russia.

"Not just anyone can do this. It's similar to hybrid technologies that we've seen in other countries. A drone of this size doesn't pass an air traffic control tower by chance," Francken said in the Belgian parliament on Wednesday.
