Hundreds of political prisoners remain in prison in Belarus after the country's leader, Alexander Lukashenko, cracked down on mass protests against the 2020 election.

Belarus has been releasing political prisoners at regular intervals over the past year. At the end of last year, opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova and Nobel laureate Ales Byalyatski were released.

Lukashenko has ruled the country with an iron fist since 1994 and is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies.
