Statkevich, who has run in several elections and has been imprisoned by the regime multiple times, has been released after suffering a stroke in prison, his wife Marina Adamovich said on social media.
"He is recovering now. He is having trouble speaking. Otherwise, everything is fine. Everything will be fine," she wrote.
Statkevich, 69, was set to be released and deported from Belarus in September, as the United States negotiated with the regime to secure the release of political prisoners. However, he refused to leave the country and remained in prison.
More than 1,000 political prisoners are still locked up in Belarus, according to the human rights group Viasna.
