Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 22 political prisoners. 20 of them were convicted of “extremist crimes,” a term used in Belarus for political cases.

A total of 15 women and seven men will be released, the president's press office announced.

There are still over 1,000 political prisoners in the country, over five years after huge protests against Lukashenko's rule were crushed.

Recently, the United States has resumed dialogue with Belarus and has called for the release of prisoners. Over 100 political prisoners were recently released in Belarus, including opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova and Nobel laureate Ales Byalyatski.
