Before the Meeting: American Aircraft Carrier near Oman

The USA has placed an aircraft carrier off the coast of Oman – just before Saturday's US-Iranian nuclear energy meeting in Oman itself. According to experts, this is seen as a show of strength from the American side.

The ship in question is the USS Carl Vinson. It has a crew of over 5,000 sailors and pilots – and space for up to 75 fighter jets, writes Lebanese L'Orient le jour.

This is the second time in six months that two American aircraft carriers are deployed simultaneously in the region. It is interpreted by experts as a rare display of power from the USA, according to the newspaper.

The American military is currently conducting intensive military attacks against Oman's neighboring country Yemen. Since mid-March, the American military has carried out over 100 attacks against the Yemeni Houthi movement.

In a statement, the US military command for the Middle East, Centcom, states that the ship will join the US's other aircraft carrier in the region, the USS Harry S Truman, which is deployed in the Red Sea.

The ship arrived two days before Saturday's highly anticipated meeting between Iran and the USA in Oman, where the two rivals will discuss a possible nuclear energy agreement.

Tehran has stated that it is willing to meet with American representatives, but that it rejects all direct dialogue under threats and pressure. The USA has threatened to bomb Iran if diplomacy fails.
