Architecture has been a theme on euro banknotes since their inception in 2002. However, the bridges depicted did not exist in reality, because no country was to be left out.

However, that didn't stop the city of Spijkenisse, outside Rotterdam, from building complete miniature versions of the mock bridges.

However, they will soon lose their appeal as new motifs are now being developed. Two final alternatives are competing: either six European cultural and scientific figures, such as Marie Curie and Ludwig van Beethoven, or six different European birds, reports the news site Euractiv.

Decisions will be made before the end of the year.
