The stock price of the German chemical company Bayer fell 6.9 percent on Monday. This after a court in the USA decided that the company should pay $2.1 billion (equivalent to 21.2 billion kronor) in damages related to the herbicide Roundup.
Large numbers of plaintiffs in the USA have sued the company for compensation for Roundup containing glyphosate, which can cause health problems, including cancer. Bayer inherited the lawsuits when the company bought the American company Monsanto in 2016.
Now Bayer clarifies in a press release that the company believes, based on both research and legislation, to have strong arguments for appealing the verdict in the USA.
Bayer agreed to a settlement of nearly $10.9 billion with a number of plaintiffs in the USA in 2020. However, there were still several unresolved legal proceedings left.
