The forestry and steel industry has been struggling for a longer period with declining production. Now signs of a turnaround are visible, according to the industry.

The US trade war and a stronger krona, which means more expensive goods for export buyers, are cited as reasons for the weak development of the Swedish basic industry. According to the industry organization Industriarbetsgivarna, production volumes fell by four percent in 2024. So far this year, the decline is approximately one percent lower than in 2024. The pulp and paper industry is doing the worst.

The industry sees signs that it has bottomed out, but at continued weak levels.

"The prolonged low-conjuncture is already leaving its mark and the number of notices in the basic industry is increasing. There is a great risk of further notices ahead," writes Industriarbetsgivarna in a conjuncture report.
