A man in his 40s has died in an accident while base jumping from Mount Kjerag in Norwegian Lysefjord.

The emergency services were alerted on Saturday at around 5 pm and informed that the man had hit the rock face. The police sent a helicopter, as well as personnel with climbing skills, since the man was located in steep and inaccessible terrain.

His life could not be saved when they reached him several hours later. The man was a resident in the country, not a Norwegian citizen.

This is the 16th death among base jumpers at Kjerag since 1996, reports Aftenposten.

The extreme sport involves jumping with a wingsuit from structures such as bridges and cliffs.
