The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.6 percent, while the broad-based S&P 500 index and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index each rose 0.3 percent.
Nvidia rose 2.1 percent after Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC reported higher-than-expected profit in the last quarter. TSMC, one of Nvidia's most important suppliers, also said it expects to invest up to $56 billion this year.
Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were also winners, up 5.8 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively. Both banks delivered quarterly reports that exceeded analysts' forecasts.
