The robbers held 25 people – both customers and employees – hostage for two hours before escaping through a tunnel with loot from dozens of safe deposit boxes.
Images in local media show how police smashed windows to get into the bank.
"Thanks to the rapid response, all hostages were freed shortly after 1:30 p.m., without serious injuries," Naples regional leader Michele di Bari said in a statement.
When asked how much the stolen goods were worth, he said:
"No one except the customers knows what was in those boxes."
One man told local news site Fanpage.it that the robbers had locked them in a room but that, despite being armed, they “did not use force.”
