Bangladesh to raise garment workers’ minimum wage after protests and clashes

The minimum wage for garment workers in Bangladesh will be raised, a promise made after five days of protests and clashes.

The new minimum wage will be set in December, allowing workers to receive their new salaries in January, a government committee announced.

The committee was established on Sunday in response to growing protests by textile workers in several parts of the country. The protests have at times turned violent, with demonstrators throwing stones at police, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades. The protests continued on Wednesday.

The textile workers are demanding a minimum wage of around 2,400 Swedish kronor - more than double what they earn today.

More than four million people work in Bangladesh’s textile industry, which generates around four-fifths of the country’s export earnings. Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest clothing exporter after China.
