Bangladesh Police Clash With Textile Workers Demanding Higher Wages

Textile workers in Bangladesh are protesting for higher wages. On Monday, security forces cracked down hard on the demonstrators.

North of the capital, Dhaka, police have fired stun grenades at hundreds of workers blocking a four-lane highway.

Clashes have broken out in the industrial hubs of Gazipur and Ashulia. Police have responded with tear gas and stun grenades in densely populated areas.

There are children here, but the police don't care, 24-year-old Kamona told AFP.

The textile workers are demanding that the minimum wage be raised to the equivalent of around 2,400 Swedish kronor - more than double their current pay.

Bangladesh is the world's second-largest clothing exporter and makes clothes for some of the biggest international brands. Millions of Bangladeshis work in the country's textile factories, often in tough and unsafe conditions. Many have now gone on strike.
