The bacteria in question, vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), infect through feces and are resistant to several types of antibiotics. However, it is said that it has not caused any serious illness so far.
It is important to emphasize that this primarily leads to carriage of this bacterium, and that it is unusual to become really sick. If you become sick from this bacterium, we also have treatment, says Anneli Fagerberg to the magazine.
One reason for the spread is believed to be inadequate cleaning. Already last winter, when the first case was discovered, the hospital found that hygiene routines need to be followed better.
We can always improve and such an outbreak shows that it obviously has spread bacteria that we do not want to spread, says Fagerberg.
To reduce the spread, the hospital has reduced the number of hospital beds, so that risk patients can be cared for with their own toilet.
