Lyon won 2-0 and has taken hold ahead of the quarterfinal return on home turf next week. But it could have been better if it weren't for Maria Grohs, who made a comeback after four months' absence.
In November, the 23-year-old German announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and would be away from football for an indefinite period. On Tuesday, the German was back in Bayern Munich's starting eleven.
And "Mala" did everything she could to keep the meeting alive.
Tabitha Chawinga had already given Lyon the lead 1-0 when, in added time of the first half, it became even tougher for the home team; after a video review, the visitors from France were awarded a penalty.
Then Maria Grohs stepped forward. American Lindsey Heaps' penalty was well-placed, but Grohs gambled correctly and got her hand on the ball.
The penalty save gave Bayern energy, and after the break, the equalizer hung in the air for a while. And when Lyon finally pushed forward and created sharp scoring opportunities, Grohs stood in the way with one fine parade after another.
But Lyon's attacking stars had the final say. Melchie Dumornay won a header duel against Bayern's two Swedish center-backs Linda Sembrant and Magdalena Eriksson and got the ball to Lindsey Heaps.
The American avenged her penalty miss and found her way back to Dumornay, who set the final score at 2-0.
