A woman gave birth to a child during the perilous journey from the African mainland to the Spanish Canary Islands.
The woman and the newborn were rescued from the inflatable rubber boat they were traveling in along with a large group of people by the Spanish coastguard.
The two were taken by helicopter to Arrecife, on the island of Lanzarote, the coastguard announced on social media.
Tens of thousands of migrants travel in unsafe vessels to sea towards the Canary Islands every year. But the journey is dangerous – according to the Spanish organization Caminando Fronteras, which focuses on migrants' rights, over 10,000 people died or disappeared on the way last year.
