"They (the protesters) attacked the police, government centers, Revolutionary Guard centers, banks and mosques, and they burned the Koran. It was like a coup," Khamenei said, according to the pro-regime Tasnim news agency.
Khamenei adds that the coup has been put down.
Iran has been rocked by protests over the past month, during which thousands of activists have been killed, according to exile groups. US President Donald Trump has threatened action over the violence against protesters. He recently said a “massive war fleet” is on its way to Iran.
"The Americans should know that if they start a war, it will be a regional war this time," Khamenei said.
