On Wednesday evening local time in Sweden, a large ceremony was to begin in Tehran, where mourners would have the opportunity to say goodbye to the remains of "the nation's martyred guide," according to an earlier message issued via Iran's state media.

Then came word that the ceremony was canceled. State-controlled media said they expected unprecedented crowds of mourners. Attacks by the country's war adversaries, the United States and Israel, continued on Monday, with bombings also hitting the capital, Tehran.

A new date will be announced shortly, according to the Fars news agency, among others.

The ceremony for Khamenei was to begin in a large mosque in Tehran. The burial will take place in his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran.

Khamenei had ruled Iran as the country's supreme spiritual leader for just over 36 years. He was 86 years old when he was killed in an airstrike in connection with the United States and Israel starting a war with Iran on Saturday.
