Local authorities in the county of West Sussex are urging residents to stay away – and definitely not to eat the fruit.
"Fruit that has washed ashore may be unfit for consumption. Anyone who has brought any fruit home is advised to immediately discard it," a spokesperson said, according to The Guardian .
It was last Saturday that the ship Baltic Klipper lost parts of its cargo in the waters between the Isle of Wight and the British mainland.
Eight of the containers were filled with bananas, two with plantains and one with avocados. The rest were empty.
The ship was loaded in mid-November in South America and was en route to Portsmouth. None of the crew were injured.
