According to the ruling, the appeal is dismissed because there is insufficient grounds for a retrial. At the same time, the court has toughened the sentence by removing the now 52-year-old woman’s eligibility for parole after 33 years.
It was during a lunch in 2023 that the woman served beef Wellington, a baked beef fillet stuffed with mushrooms, to her former in-laws, her mother-in-law’s sister and her husband. But instead of mushrooms, the filling contained deadly fly agaric, one of the world’s most poisonous mushrooms.
The woman’s then-husband was also invited but declined because of tensions between them. The couple were still married at the time but were in the process of separating.
Three of the people did not survive the poisoning. One survived thanks to a liver transplant. In that case, the woman has been convicted of attempted murder.
The motive remains unclear. She has denied any wrongdoing and claimed it was an accident.
