Helen's left leg was amputated on Monday, Phil Haines told the media in Melbourne.

We had hoped that her right leg could be saved, but now the surgeons have been forced to remove that too.

A 43-year-old motorist has been arrested for deliberately mowing down a member of parliament outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The perpetrator's motive is unclear.

Haines, now 65, was originally a midwife. In the 2000s, she lived in Uppsala, where she received her doctorate in medicine about 15 years ago.
